Canada Montréal I'm setting up a coworking space Since the beginning I think Going on 2 years. Freelance web developer Home and cafes. - Hard for ollaborations
    - No meeting rooms
    - Can't really do full days in one place
    All three.
Ease the meeting, learning and general connecting with other freelancers.
Help out new people and organisations.
    - Freelancers new to the 'scene' to find others / tricks / help, etc.
    - Startups at very early stages.
    - Not for profits and volunteer organisations with a place to meet.
Thinking/talking for a year. Really actually moving for 4-5 weeks. 4-5 investors with possible sponsors (although those will likely come after the opening). Possible gov. grants but we're not putting them in the budget, bonus. 6 at this stage of planning/ investing. 10 counting probable anchors. Canada Toronto I'm interested in finding a coworking space to work from   Since I spent some time coworking in San Francisco last fall. Web Writer/Information Architect Home Office. Being at home doesn't allow for effective connection with like-minded people. Coworking allows you to connect with real people, instead of people simply on the web.

    .

United States of America San Francisco I'm interested in setting up a coworking space 6 months+ Since 1999 - had offices in a shared studio complex with a variety of other companies and artists entrepreneur   Lack of social interaction / networking with new people   Co-workers that are in areas / sectors that are complementary to mine. Diversity is good but often having some common focus / target market helps.                       3 months personal and external investment 5 No A space for my current ventures and associated companies No - still early stage Co-working meetups / conference calls / virtual networking (second life?) I'm interested in having access to space overseas / partnering with co-working spaces in Europe / Asia etc.

    .

New Zealand Auckland I'm interested in setting up a coworking space A couple of months (still only lurking though). Have been working on my own for approx. two years. About a year ago, I started realising I needed to get out the home office more, and missed hanging out with fellow workers.

I've also thought about renting serviced office space but can't really see the point - without fellow co-workers: I would have to commute, and pay for facilities that I already have in my home office. Co-working appeals mostly because of the interaction with like-minded people, not because of the office-like facilities it would provide.

Then I found out about how someone set up a 'OpenCoffee' meetup in Wellington, and about your initiative. I've been interested and looking into it ever since.
Usability/User Experience consultant Spare room/home-office - approx. 45mins from downtown Auckland, New Zealand Alone-ness'
    Some lack of routine/discipline
Lack of work-related 'cubicle talk' (not gossip - but work stuff that I don't necessarily *need* to know, but woudn't mind being *aware* of)
Lack of 'visibility' (i.e. others being aware of me and what I do)

To a lesser extent, lack of some printing and posting facilities
Will force me/encourage me to get out of the house more often
Allow me to hang out with like minded people, find out what the latest issues/trends/developments are
    Learn from others
    Collaborate on projects
    Good coffee!
Group thinking tools: whiteboards, datashows, etc
Continued lurking is entirely due to my own lack of initiative! You guys are doing a great job...

This survey has already been a good impetus...

If anything, more practical tips on:
-how to find out whether other people in the area would be interested
-how to go about finding suitable space (I don't know the first thing about real estate, what's a good price per square meter, etc)
It's seems like a good place to start a co-working initiative is to set up an OpenCoffee meetup at a popular cafe with wifi. What if, however, there is no such space in your area? What are other good initial rallying places? I wonder if anything else if facing this issue? (Maybe this would be a good question for the mailing list...)

United States of America Austin, TX I'm interested in setting up a coworking space just joined a few years Run VPchat, do consulting in the web 2.0/social media areas from home & coffee shops mostly I'm just too isolated - I need to be around people. I'd like to set up a space that *I'd* like to work from - hoping for collaborative opportunities and good, creative energy. And good coffee. I'm a serial entrepreneur (sold a company to Excite in 96). I'm really thinking this needs to be my next project... Things I'm thinking about for the space I want to create: Chargers for Macs, PCs, & phones. Printers, scanner, interactive white board, movable walls, automated space scheduling (by hour, day, week). Access to pricey libraries - Lexis/Nexus, O'Reilly library, etc.     I plan to when I open - MeetUps, brainstorming groups, but also some non-tech events, like moveon.org gatherings, discussion groups, interesting speakers passing through, etc.   I will offer both.             Originally I thought about a coffee shop - it evoloved into this about a month ago. Funding much of it myself. I'd like to offer some sort of cooperative investing - have to find someone to work with on that. If that doesn't work out, I'll have no problem getting a loan for a chunk of it. I have a few friends expressing interest in 'helping', a few interested in investin, but mostly it's me. No, it will be another business, although I plan to work there a lot. * Somewhere I want to work
    * I'd like it to be a social and professional hub for the tech/creative set
    * Affordable/free for some nonprofits
    * Excellent place to work - great atmosphere, benefits
Not yet. Soon, very soon. I'm so new to it - I don't know yet.   I'll let you know :)

    Italy Voltago Agordino, that's my own town name, where i plan to start setting up a coworking space I'm interested in setting up a coworking space Never I grew up professionally in collaborative spaces; later i worked in the computer industry, where collaborative spaces could not be created because of obvious vested interests; after witnessing the failure of the Open Systems international standardization efforts of the early nineties, just before the WWW outburst, i tried my luck as a consultant with an ahead of times perception of what i used to call an Open System Environment. Now, as a retired 'grandpa', i'm still very eager to contribute starting - and operating - a collaborative space in my mountain community location, in the Italian rocky mountains (the Dolomites). Retired grandpa ... grandkids are my business :) ... Home in Voltago Agordino (North Eastern Italy) and home in Bologna ... where I work occasionaly as English - Italian translator ... Digital divide; i.e. difficulty to grasp the potential of web based relationship management, either due to lack of broad band Internet access or to lack of literacy and/or direct web comunication experience The presentation problem of people - like me - willing to propose a collaborative approach to content and project development activities;
The complexity problem preventing non ICT versed people from becoming involved in such prospective activities.

United States of America atlanta I'm interested in setting up a coworking space 1 year 6 years. We brought an interactive design firm in San Fran in late 97. It was a 3 person company and the best solution would have been to place the group in a collaborative vs. building out our own office.

United States of America Los Altos, CA I'm interested in finding a coworking space to work from just joined couple of years entrepreneur home, or wifi cafes in Mountain View and Palo Alto working at home is not productive

quality of work environment at wifi cafes is too variable

feel guilty that I don't drink enough coffee to pay for the space I take up at a coffeeshop

United States of America Chicago I'm interested in setting up a coworking space 2 weeks I've been considering an idea to service mobile workers for about 2 years now. Training Manager Chicago Transit Authority

    Chicago, Illinois
For those who work out of their home, coworking space provides the traditional business environment where one can see clients. networking with others of 'like mind' is a benefit of coworking access to equipment such as printers, projectors (meeting space) etc. na n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a several months Now in the process of developing a business plan; will look at small business loan or a combination of creative sources currently 2 yes Provide a space for independents, consultants, contractors, mobile workers etc. to meet and work in a traditonal office setting. United States of America Philadelphia I'm setting up a coworking space 6 months 9 months Web Developer From home/for myself no conference amenities, minimal 'real' human contact, moderate collaborative opportunities (i must seek them out) a coworking space would provide professional conference amenities, daily human interaction, and a high rate of opportunities for collaboration                         6 + months private investment (out of pocket) + sponsorship 4-6 core, 4-6 auxillary this will not be my core business i would like to not only provide a space for me (and other indies) to get out of the house but also a venue for finding other network-able talent. it is my hope that coworking will help put Philadelphia on the map for independent creative talent. there is a ton of quality freelance talent, its just very hard to find it and centralize it. coworking, I think, will help http://www.independentshall.org

United States of America Salt Lake City I'm interested in finding a coworking space to work from 0 days. About a year. The regular: self-employed web developer. At home, coworkers' homes, coffee shops, etc. Getting sick of working where I live. Get me out of the house. Let me be around other people with like-minded pursuits during work. Wifi. Wifi. Electric tea kettle!                                       An invitation. Salt Lake City would be a great place to start a coworking place, but I have not the money to start one right now. There are none that I know of so far, there are a lot of tech geeks here, some startups, and a lot of artists. Downtown SLC is pretty cheap to live and the government offers economic incentives sometimes to people leasing space on Main Street I believe (it's a little dead down there sometimes). I emailed a guy from Denver setting up a coworking space and he sounded mildly interested in SLC.

    .

United States of America Austin, TX both watching list AND possibly interested in setting up or finding a coworking space March 2007 Collaborative spaces? Well I've been interested in collaborative work groups for decades. The spaces idea, outside of a single work institution, is a new one to me. Participatory design, user experience, software architecture and agile practice consulting. At home. Separation from others. Provide a location with other people doing interesting work that can provide some work socialization and potential business networking. But the socialization aspect is the most important. Community feeling' is too ill defined for me to be sure what I'm rating.
Oh, design of space is important. Does the space have a coherent design? I'd prefer that over a set of old desks sitting in a room. (Although I have worked in a room filled with desks.)
First I need to clarify my own objectives. Collecting case studies of spaces that work and don't, as well as the conversation on the mailing list, are useful to read. Be available to noobie questions -- but I'm pretty sure you folks are. I don't want to hog any more space.

    .

United States of America Long Island, NY I occasionally work out of a coworking space About a month. A few months. Project Manager At home. Lack of social interaction.
    Lack of networking possibilities.
Talented people in similar situations and roughly the same field spending time together fosters great collaboration and friendships.                                         Just give me something to do and I'm in!

United States of America San Francisco I run a coworking space since it started. 3 years consultant San Francisco It's losing money. Figure out more cost effective ways to run the space; network with other spaces.   6 mos 350/mo for desk + key
    1 level
yep. Net Tuesday, parties, other community events. Sort of. Depends, but convenience fee of $25. Hybrid. No, but sometimes if feels like it. We'd like to make money, but right now, we're losing it! If you pay monthly, you get a key. We don't have a mgmt system for keys, though we've thought about implementing one. Not really. Through events and word of mouth. http://citizenspace.us
Promotion, calendar, list coworkers, have people find us, map...
Not really. The flowers are a nice touch.

United Kingdom Brighton I'm just watching the list about a month For a number of years on and off. Did work out of a shared office space for a while in 2001/02. Freelance Technology Consultant At home and on client sites. Working from home it's far too easy to get sidetracked. Going to somewhere to work helpd focus the mind.

    .

Ireland Bandon I'm interested in setting up a coworking space 2 months 4 months Entrepreneur Home Office Five children, minimal peer interaction A more structured environment with the ability to collaborate and network with peers. Flexible attendance is important. Currently discussing Coworking with some 'incubator units' in Ireland. They like the idea and are strong on collaboration but they charge by the month rather than week/day. Having said that, they are pretty cheap ($250 per month) so maybe it is not such a huge problem.                       1 month More looking at lightweight spare-desk sharing between a group of home-based freelancers. 3 no provide a hub for freelancers and home-based workers to get things done, build networks, find opportunities and grow the start-up community in South West Ireland No       Maybe a one-page 'flyer' on wiki that we could point office-space owners to. It would focus on the benefit to them of having Coworking spaces in their buildings.

United States of America Chapel Hill, NC I'm interested in setting up a coworking space joined Feb 20 2007 three years Web Designer Design firm in Raleigh, NC Too far from home I want to build a coworking space closer to home but also reap the cool qualities of the small town of Carrboro, NC. Developing a better walkable/biking community that is more environmentally responsible is pretty important to me. still in early startup phase n/a would like too                 two months Looking for private investors, anchor tenants, and Town loans two at this point yes A cool environment that encourages creative people to collaborate and improves the quality of life for people who live in and around Carrboro/Chapel Hill carrboro.coworking.info Consolidation of lessons learned on the coworking.info wiki... may already be happening Hopping that business software geared towards coworking space comes about soon.

United Kingdom Chelmsford, Essex I'm setting up a coworking space 2 yr 2 yr open source advocate home lonely meeting ppl     £0, it's a cafe. £200pw bills plus staff (1) Will do. e.g. eBay intro, geneaology intro, networking intro, linkedin intro, linux intro, openoffice intro, firefox intro, etc. Will do, no idea of price yet. No dedicated spaces. The idea is that it's a place to meet new people, not see the same old faces. Kinda - it's there to fund building of the open4.org website Hopefully make enough to live on No keys None yet. Will do lots of PR though. http://www.freshconnection.info It's gonna r0ck the world ;) 2 yr One contact in US is funding computers, local contact is funding the rest - vending machines, rent, etc. Me as entrepreneur + idea guy. Ismail rents the space, Michael in US is funding PCs, other friends helping out. Yes Help more people discover and use free software.
Help people realise that to achieve your dreams all you have to do is talk to more people - hundreds, if not thousands of them.
http://www.freshconnection.info Lighten up a bit on the newbies - sometimes people pop in and ask stuff, and it's a bit like a LUG - i.e. if you're not in the 'in' crowd then you feel like you need to go buy the latest Nike shoes or something. Everyone who pops in and posts posts for a reason, so it would be nice not to shove them away if they post something which isn't in 'the doctrine'. Also, it feels a little like yourself and Chris are the people who run 'coworking' and are not open to new concepts - what I'm setting up *is* coworking, but not as you guys know it. I'm not setting up a 'third workspace', but a 'fourth space' - it's similar but significantly different. Networks are non-competitive and I believe we should all work together for a common cause - helping people develop themselves. Whether that's in a coffee shop, a third space, or a fourth, we should be open to them all. Peace and love etc....! More connecting. It's not about the spaces, but the people in them. Recently I've been talking a lot to the opencafe in SA, and introduced them to the linuxcaffe in T.O. - can't believe they didn't know each other already. I think sometimes you guys get bogged down in the 'real world' stuff, whereas really what we're doing is connecting people who are our future.

United States of America downtown Dallas I'm interested in finding a coworking space to work from n/a; citizen agency blog since first barcamp Dallas. worked with Raven for a while on a space for Dallas. totally c&b'd when he moved to Portland. web dev home and coffee shop irregularity (time not digestion) regularity (ditto)                                           there needs to be that one person who is super motivated to get out of the house. i host 'coworking' at my house with 1-2 more people. i also know of some other people that are doing something similar. there is also a particularly big starbucks that has a very regular brain trust going. and the coffee shop i am typing from has many regulars as does another one nearby. i think what i'm looking for more than space is the partner...and a business partner at that. i guess i'm really more interested in entrepreneur networks than coworking space specifically...although it would be cool if there was a kind of space where we could kind of pre-collaborate collaborate. (have stopped making much sense.) there is some talk in town of sabre sponsoring some space, but is super slow going. if the space was just THERE magically ($$-wise), a lot of cool stuff could happen.

United States of America Mission District, San Francisco I'm interested in finding a coworking space to work from Web Worker Daily. I might be interested. What is the list? I just started working as a full-time freelancer a couple of months ago. So I guess a couple of months. Freelance Web Developer at home, and cafes. Home gets boring because I'm usually the only one here. Cafes just get old after awhile, and I start to feel awkward using a place that seems primarily social as a place for me to always be sitting alone in front of my laptop. I see coworking as just another option for spicing up the freelance working experience. It would be cool to meet other people who have more unstructured (non-office) jobs, to socialize and network.

Web Entrepreneur/Web General Contractor @Home It is sometimes too quiet at home, and there are too many distractions with the HDTV, etc. etc. I would also enjoy collaborative discussions on industry with fellow tech/web people. I think that many non location specific workers lack the social connection of a workspace, in addition sometimes jobs have certain aspects that need to be farmed out. A coworking facility could become like the local tavern used to be, a place for web workers of a certain locality to meet, share resources and ideas, and simply be somewhat social. I used to market my wifes work, but now I am a realtor selling fixer uppers in Hudson. I work at my bosses real estate office. The location is not great. Its a little noisy with very little privacy The challenge in Hudson is that there are lots of creatives but they never synch. I think there is a huge need for a co-working space, but most creatives dont realize what they never experienced. Many creatives work out of their homes and go to NYC (2 hours by Amtrack) and do their thing. Hudson needs to be a creative place more unto itself to become a real, creative, cool-town.
